Deborah Jay - Napoleon's Other Wife

Deborah Jay - Napoleon's Other Wife

Eighteen-year-old Habsburg Archduchess Marie-Louise leaves Vienna in 1810 to marry Napoleon, Emperor of France, previously her father’s arch-enemy. Like her great-aunt Marie-Antoinette forty years earlier, Marie-Louise believes her marriage will secure peace between Austria and France. But the Austrian foreign minister, Klemens Metternich, intends to use her marriage to bring down Napoleon for good. Unexpectedly, Marie-Louise finds Napoleon an adorable, loving, romantic husband and duly produces a dynastic heir. Their time together is cut short by Napoleon’s Russian Campaign, which sets in train wars that lead to her father marching on Paris. When Napoleon is defeated at Waterloo and despatched to St Helena, Marie-Louise is finally granted the duchies of Parma, Piacenza and Guastalla. Marie-Louise proves her devotion to her subjects to such a degree that they keep silent as regards her secrets. But Europe is scandalised when all is revealed on the premature death of her lover. Marie-Louise fights to retain her Parman throne against the French and Spanish Bourbons who covet it, and against the forces of Italian patriotism which Napoleon inspired. Marie-Louise has many enemies: she is hated by most of the reactionary sovereigns in Europe for being Napoleon’s wife and for creating the most enlightened state in the Italian peninsula. She hangs on to her duchies by the skin of her teeth. Within a fortnight of Marie-Louise’s death, revolution spreads across the Italian Peninsula, engulfing her duchies.

Deborah Jay - Napoleon's Other Wife

Napoleon's Other Wife will change your perspective of Napoleon. Deborah Jay's dramatised biography is based on a decade's worth of research, which took the author on a journey to many places around the world - from Parma to New York, Elba to Russia - and included the discovery of previously undiscovered notes and letters. This is not historical fiction, instead Deborah has chosen to write the truth, without speculation or fictionalisation, to redeem Marie-Louise, an independent woman who is a worthy role model for 21st century women today.

Napoleon's Other Wife shows Napoleon in a different light - his domestic sphere - demonstrating the conflicts of his personality. More importantly, this biography is very much focused on Marie-Louise - and not entirely epithetical to Napoleon.

Josephine attracts constant interest and Marie-Louise has historically received very little attention. Deborah Jay is keen to rectify this situation and bring Marie-Louise's life to the centre of attention. Deborah explains: "Marie-Louise’s life was, in many ways, infinitely more interesting than Josephine’s, and she had without doubt a far greater impact on the lives of many. Apart from anything else, she bore Napoleon’s only legitimate child. Josephine was the 'trophy' wife, bereft of any feminist or humanitarian message: there is nothing permanent which attests to any true independent thinking, to any major achievements, to any advance of any kind of feminist agenda. Born into one of Europe’s leading dynasties, Marie-Louise was neither in awe of Napoleon, though he adored her, nor clinging to him for his status. Instead, she decided to strike out for herself and their son, and is an inspiration to the modern woman."

Napoleon’s Other Wife is an intensely human portrayal of an exceptional woman’s fight for survival in extraordinary times.
