Collaboration talks…

By Matt Bradbeer, co-founder of Indie.ws

Authors have more opportunities than ever to get their work onto the bookshelves of booksellers. With the rise of self-publishing, anyone can upload anything to self-publishing websites and see their work available for sale; No curation, publish anything you want. This was ostensibly a good thing, but retailers and readers are getting smarter and the quality bar is being raised, along with expectations.

Any author wanting to publish their book now and in the future, has to ensure that their novel or work is the best it can be. It is no longer a cunning plan to upload your writing to a self-publishing site and hope that it sells on the strength of the writing alone.

You can go to an Indie publishing site and get templates for print, ebook conversion, online cover designers and basic distribution. These are great, but if the finished product is dodgy, you will be wasting your time.

The people buying your book are buying a “product” and judging it accordingly. They will make a purchase decision based on a mixture of things. If they don’t know who you are, it will be on the front cover, the synopsis and then a quick skim read – in that order. Fail on the cover, they won’t read the synopsis, fail that and they won’t skim read.  All three of these things has to hit the spot in terms of quality to meet the buyer's expectations.

A good book needs a decent cover, it needs proofing and it should really be edited. It is extremely rare that an author is able to do all of these things properly on their own. You need a publishing team. You need to collaborate with other people, organisations, communities or companies to build this team.

If you land a traditional publishing deal for your book, well done, you now have a publishing team and Bob’s your uncle.

But, if you are one of the 98% of authors without a traditional deal you still have a wealth of options. Options that can give you the same (or more) support and create the quality of, a traditional publisher. There are a lot of websites and organisations that can point you in the direction of people and places to build your team, a team that consists of:

Cover Designer - Getting a decent cover is the first step to greatness. It has to be a cover that could sit in a Waterstone’s front window and not look out of place.

Proofer - Get your book proofed by someone who really knows what they are doing.
Do these two things and you are in a good place.

Editor -  A copyeditor that can content edit is a bonus

A publishing/distribution partner - You can do this yourself, but you will have limited distribution. Find a collaborative indie publisher who gives you the same reach as a traditional publisher.

PR - Not easy to do yourself. The best PR services tell you what will and will not work and will not scattergun.
